Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure to expose more tooth surface. Gum tissue, and sometimes bone, can be removed from around one or more teeth. This treatment may be required to access a tooth which is damaged or broken below the gum line.
Crown lengthening may also be a treatment option for a “gummy” smile, which improves the proportion of tooth length and gum.
Before the procedure, your dentist and periodontist will review your medical history and evaluate the condition of your teeth, gums and jawbone with scans and X-rays.
The surgical intervention is carried out under local anaesthetic to numb the area to be treated. Gum tissue is then removed to reveal more of the tooth. After the procedure, the gums will be sutured.
Your dentist will evaluate the healing process after one or two weeks and if required, advise you on the next stage of your dental restoration treatment.
